Rutland County Audubon Society issued the following announcement on March 20.
The Marsh is ALIVE once again with the sound of returning birds. Eight travelers from as far away as NC monitored the West Rutland Marsh yesterday and were greeted by 28 species of singing birds.( Some saw a 29th, a Belted Kingfisher!) Major surprises included some female Red winged Blackbirds, which were thought not to have returned as early as their male counterparts, four trilling Winter Wrens, a high count for this area, and a lovely Kinglet, ensconced in a thicket off the new boardwalk on Whipple Hollow Road. Waterfowl seen were lots of honking Canada Geese, Wood Ducks, Mallards, and Common Mergansers. What had started off as a dreary, rainy morning turned into a bright day of sight and sound .We can't wait to see what April brings!
