Hot weather is expected to continue through the weekend. I am reposting information about cooling centers and the signs, symptoms, and treatment of heat-related injuries.

The best cure for heat-related injuries is prevention. If preventative measures are taken head of time, most heat-related injuries can be avoided. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". His expression means that, when dealing with a problem, spending a small amount of time and effort early on is a good investment. It can save you more trouble in the end.

The Castleton Free Library is a location one can seek shelter from the heat and humidity. The phone number is 802-468-5574. The hours of operation are Friday 10:00 – 6:00 and Saturday 10:00 – 2:00. The library is located at 638 Main Street, https://castletonfreelibrary.org/ They have free Wi-Fi and plenty of reading materials and other options to entertain yourself while escaping the oppressive temperatures. Another resource to seek assistance for seniors and caregivers is the Central Vermont Council on Aging. They can be contacted at their helpline, (802) 477-1364. https://www.cvcoa.org/

If you are concerned about a neighbor, friend or family doesn't have air conditioning and they need assistance, or you would like a health and welfare check by first responders, please contact the Castleton Police Department at (802) 468-2750 or the Emergency Management Director at (802) 779-8393. If you know somebody exhibiting signs and symptoms of a heat-related injury, please take it seriously as it can turn deadly if left untreated. Attached is a copy of the signs, symptoms, and treatment of heat cramps. heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, or use the following link to learn more about heat-related injuries. When in doubt, seek medical attention. https://www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html

Vermont data indicates that emergency department visits for heat-related illnesses increase when temperatures reach the mid- to upper-80s, with impacts getting progressively worse as temperatures rise into the 90s. Humid conditions make the temperature feel even hotter.
