In Arrears for Property Taxes or Utilities - There is help available.
Many may not know that there is $50 million available to lower-income Vermont homeowners to pay past due mortgages, property taxes, utilities, or HOA fees on their primary residence if they have been impacted by Covid. The Homeowner Assistance Program is administered by the VT Housing Finance Agency and as we reported last week, in the first six months of the program we've paid out over one-quarter of the program funds.
There are currently 85 eligible applications for past due property taxes but their towns that have yet to sign up for the program. Additionally, there are another 43 applications for sewer and water utility assistance managed locally that are not enrolled. The Town of Castleton has signed on for the program (property taxes and sewer) and several residents have submitted applications. The Town does not control drinking water, so if you are in arrears for your water bill, please contact the Fire District you fall under and inquire. In short, there are federal funds that are owed to the municipality (including fire districts) and the program managers are eager to send them out, but VHFA needs the municipality (including fire districts) to agree to participate in the program before we can release the funds.
